How did the collective get started?

Transient Pod was founded in 2007 by Creative Director, Educator & Diving Aficionado Miles Nurse. Miles is extremely passionate about work life balance and understands the power of a design collective vs a traditional studio model.  Miles’ views on talent are simple: attract and align the right talent. Take care of the team and they will take care of the work.

How did we come up with the name?

As a PADI Master Instructor Miles has always used the amazing underwater landscape as inspiration for designs and user experiences. One of his passions is to promote and share this experience with fellow designers, clients, and underwater enthusiasts. When it comes to marine life, Miles is a fanatic and his favorite underwater creatures include sharks, orcas, & octopus. One of his most memorable experiences was when he encountered a transient pod of orcas while diving in the gulf island with the Canadian Free Diving Team.  Transient pods of orcas travel in small well organized groups and have a much larger range than resident pods. Sometimes these pods are considered radical or rogue but they are extremely cooperative and this makes them effective at achieving common goals.

This became the inspiration for a design collective. Creating small focused groups of extremely talented individuals who had a larger creative range of skills and life experiences. A group that at is core was about solving problems and had the ability to “affect something or produce results beyond itself” (Websters dictionary.) This is the essence of the Transient Pod Design Collective.
